Bertil Uggla
Bertil Gustafsson Uggla (born August 19, 1890 in Solna , † September 29, 1945 in Karlstad ) was a Swedish pole vaulter , fencer and modern pentathlete .
At the pole vault of the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912, he finished fourth with 3.80 m, together with Frank Murphy and William Halpenny , behind gold medalist Harry Babcock (3.95 m) and silver medalists Frank Nelson and Marc Wright (3.85 m) . Deviating from the usual practice, the three fourth-placed received a bronze medal (Halpenny had injured himself when falling into the insufficiently secured pit). At the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, he won bronze in the modern pentathlon.
Uggla took part in Olympic fencing competitions three times: in 1920 in Antwerp , he was eliminated from the preliminary round with the sword in both individual and team competitions. In 1924 in Paris came the team competition again in the first round. In 1928 in Amsterdam he was twelfth in the individual ranking with the foil, but failed in the epee with the team again in the preliminary round. He was successful with the Degen team at the international championships: they won bronze in Warsaw in 1934 and silver in Lausanne in 1935 .
In 1909, 1911 and 1912 he became national champion in pole vault.
His father Gustaf Uggla was a general in the Swedish military, his older brother Bengt was also active in the military and in modern pentathlon. Like his father and brother, Bertil Uggla was a member of the Swedish military and held the rank of colonel there until his death .
Uggla was a member of the Sveriges Olympiska Kommitté from 1928 until his accidental death . He had an accident while training in the forest.
