William Halpenny

William Halpenny (born May 23, 1882 on Prince Edward Island , † February 10, 1960 in Charlottetown ) was a Canadian pole vaulter .

In 1908 he was US champion, in 1909 and 1910 US indoor champion and from 1911 to 1913 three times in a row Canadian champion.

At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912, he jumped 3.80 m, but injured himself so badly in the fall that he had to abandon the competition. The Olympic Committee subsequently came to the conclusion that the pitfall was not adequately secured for such high jumps and, like the other two athletes who shared fourth place with him ( Frank Murphy and Bertil Uggla ), awarded Halpenny , in a departure from normal practice the bronze medal.
