Ray Ewry , who had dominated the standing jump competitions in the previous games , had retired from active competitive sports. His Olympic record was not reached here.

With one exception, the first three heights were overcome in the first attempt, only Leo Goehring needed a second attempt at 1.40 meters. All jumpers, Konstantinos Tsiklitiras and Richard Byrd, only managed the fourth height of 1.50 meters on the second attempt. At 1.55 meters Edvard Möller, Goehring and Byrd were eliminated, the Greek needed a second attempt and then failed at the next height of 1.60 meters. The Adams brothers now agreed to victory among themselves. Platt jumped the 1.63 meters, his brother Ben failed. Platt Adams, certain Olympic champion, then tried in vain at 1.66 meters.

Platt Adams' gold medal was the fourth US victory in the fourth and final Olympic competition in the discipline.
