Benjamin Howard Baker (born February 13, 1892 in Liverpool , † September 10, 1987 in Warminster ) was a British athlete and footballer .
Career
Career as a track and field athlete
Benjamin Howard Baker belonged to the top of the British high and triple jumpers. Before the First World War, he won the British high jump championship for the first time in 1910 at the age of 18. He won this title two more times in 1912 and 1913. In 1921 he set a national high jump record of 1.95 m, which lasted 25 years.
In 1912 he took part in the Summer Olympics in Stockholm . The high jump competition began on July 7th. Howard Baker managed the required qualifying height of 1.83 m without any problems and was able to compete in the final the next day. There he jumped the heights of 1.60 m, 1.70 m and 1.75 m each in the first attempt. However, three failed attempts over 1.80 m meant the end and 11th and last place in the high jump final. On July 13, he then competed in the standing vault , which was held for the last time at the Olympic Games. With 1.35 m in the qualification, 1.50 m required, he remained far below his expectations and was eliminated in 16th place.
Eight years later, Benjamin Howard Baker competed at the Summer Olympics in Antwerp . Here he started in the high and triple jump. The high jump qualification began on August 15th, required 1.80 m, which he managed without any effort. In the final on August 17, he jumped 1.85 m and was sixth with this performance. On August 19th the triple jump qualification took place. Regardless of the distance, the six best jumpers made it to the final here. Howard Baker finished 8th with 13.675 m and was eliminated.
Howard Baker was very versatile in sports. In athletics, he also tried his hand at hurdling, discus throwing and long jumper. He was also found in other sports. As a tennis player, he won the Welsh Covered Courts in doubles . He was also in great demand as a water polo player .

Career as a football player
Howard Baker was an avid soccer player even in his youth. His position was the goalkeeping post. After a few years in various amateur clubs, he joined Liverpool FC as a professional in 1919. In addition, he was still active as an amateur for Corinthian FC . In 1921 he went to Everton and made his professional debut there. In the same year he moved to Chelsea.
For Chelsea FC he ran for the first time on October 15, 1921. In total, he completed 92 league and one FA Cup game by November 28, 1925.
In 1926 he went back to Everton and played 11 times. He then let his career end from 1928 to 1929 at Oldham Athletic. In his sixth league game on November 19, 1921 against Bradford City , he converted a penalty. This goal was also the winning goal, the game ended 1-0.
In 1921 Benjamin Howard Baker was appointed to the England national team for the first time. He had his first assignment in the national team on May 21, 1921 in Brussels against Belgium. The English team won 2-0. His second and final assignment was four years later. On October 24, 1925, the English team played against Ireland in Belfast . The game ended 0-0.
Life after exercise
After finishing his active sports career, Benjamin Howard Baker joined the family business. Through his work in the company that u. a. Making soups and also working in the chemical industry, he became a successful businessman in the greater Liverpool area. Benjamin Howard Baker died on September 10, 1987 at the age of 95 in Warminster, Wiltshire , west England.
