His ninth and final gold medal was won by standing jump specialist Ray Ewry from the United States. He won ahead of his compatriot John Biller and the Greek Konstantinos Tsiklitiras , who both finished tied for second and each received a silver medal.

With this competition, the American Ray Ewry completed his extremely successful Olympic career as a specialist in all standing jumping competitions and won his eighth gold medal, which he had won at three Olympic Games since 1900 . In London, too, he had previously triumphed in the standing long jump and thus won all standing jumping competitions that had ever been held at the Olympic Games. In his youth he suffered from polio, was dependent on a wheelchair and had trained his leg muscles to overcome this disease, which ultimately contributed to his great success.

Second place was shared by Ewry, defeated by just two centimeters, between the American John Biller and the Greek Konstantinos Tsiklitiras, who had already won silver in the standing long jump. Biller finished fourth there. The fourth-placed Holmes, listed here with the first name Frank as in Sports-Reference , is referred to by the first name Leroy in zur Megede . The American Platt Adams, who was to win this discipline four years later in Stockholm, finished fifth . Together with him, two French runners took this rank, including the young Géo André, who still had a long career in sports ahead of him and had won the silver medal in the high jump two days earlier .
