Mıgırdiç Mıgıryan or Mıgırdiç Mıgıryan (completely Turkish Mıgırdiç Mığıryan , Armenian Մկրտիչ Մկրյան Mkrtitsch Mkrjan * 12. September 1882 in Üsküdar , then Ottoman Empire ; † 20th century ) was one of the two athletes that the Ottoman Empire at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm and thus represented when it first took part in the Olympic Games . He took part in the disciplines shot put , discus throw , ambidextrous shot put, pentathlon and decathlon . Besides him, the country was represented by the athlete Vahram Papazyan , also an ethnic Armenian .

Life

Mığır Mığıryan was of Armenian descent and came from a wealthy family. He grew up in Üsküdar and Istanbul and attended Robert College in neighboring Arnavutköy (now a district of Istanbul). One of his classmates was Vahram Papazyan.

When the Ottoman Empire (Turkish Empire) by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1911 "official" to the organized by the IOC Olympic Games has been approved, the President gave the Turkish Olympic Committee Selim Sırrı Tarcan ads in local newspapers İkdam and Sabah on to To recruit athletes for the 1912 Olympic Games in Sweden . He was accepted and participated in five different sports disciplines in the 1912 Olympic Games. Thus Mığır Mığıryan holds the record for most sports disciplines that a Turkish athlete completed in Olympic history.

Nothing is known about his further life.

Olympic games

At the Summer Olympics in Stockholm in 1912, the two Ottoman citizens and athletes Mığır Mığıryan and Vahram Papazyan were the only ones who represented their country and carried the Ottoman flag at the opening ceremony. Both had to find their own way to finance their participation costs, as there were no grants from the state or the Olympic Committee. While Papazyan received financial support from an Armenian sports club and a charity event, Mığıryan's expenses were raised by his family.

At the Summer Games, Mığıryan managed to complete all five sports. In the decathlon against the famous athlete Jim Thorpe , he suffered a wrist injury and had to give up.
