The National Korean Dance Ensemble (The National Dance Company of Korea) is the National Dance Company of South Korea .
Affiliation
The dance company is associated with the Korean National Theater in the neighborhood of Jangchung-dong, Jung-gu, in the center of Seoul , where the National Dance Company of Korea mainly performs as well as with the National Drama Company of Korea , the National Changguk Company of Korea and the Korean National Orchestra .
History and work
The Korean Dance Ensemble was founded by the director Im Seong-Nam (임성남) and 12 other dancers in February 1962. Since then, it has been a representative dance company in South Korea with the aim of creating new dances based on traditional Korean dance and performing these works. Since its inception, the company has worked with well-known South Korean choreographers, such as the choreographer Bae Chung-hye, who has taken on the management of the approximately 60-member ensemble since 2000.
She presents Korean traditional art to the world by participating in various international festivals. The National Dance Company has a rich repertoire. Soul, Sunflower , the dance production together with the German music ensemble Saltacello ( Peter Schindler ) was shown in several sold out performances in Seoul from October 2006 to April 2007. It is a unique project of cultural cooperation between Germany and South Korea. This production reinterprets the Korean dance Salpuri. Salpuri is a dance for the purification of the soul literally means: "wash off evil spirits". In the modern version, the movements shown represent human desires and longings.
