Ali Mohamed Gharib al-Zankawi (born February 27, 1984 in Kuwait City ) is a Kuwaiti hammer thrower . He is the son of the shot putter Mohamed al-Zinkawi .

Athletic career

Ali Mohamed al-Zankawi gained his first international experience at the 2001 World Youth Championships in Debrecen , where he finished sixth with 72.91 m. He was then at the Pan-Arab Games in Damascus with 64.66 m fourth. The following year he won the silver medal at the Junior World Championships in Kingston with 73.42 m and reached sixth place at the Asian Championships in Colombo with 63.45 m. In 2003 he won with a width of 72.20 m for the first time at the Arab Championships in Amman and then with 70.62 m also at the Asian Championships in Manila . In 2004 he took part in the Olympic Games in Athens for the first time and retired there with 71.06 m in qualification and then won the Pan-Arab Games in Algiers with 72.22 m .

In 2005 he won at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Mecca with 75.96 m the silver medal behind the Tajik Dilschod Nazarow . In addition, he did not get beyond the first round at the World Championships in Helsinki with 72.28 m and defended his title at the Asian Championships in Incheon, South Korea with a throw of 71.74 m . He then won the Arab Championships in Radès with 76.10 m . In 2006 he took part in the Asian Games in Doha for the first time and won the silver medal behind Nazarow with 73.14 m. In 2007 he won for the third time in a row at the Arab Championships and the Asian Championships in Amman , where he reached a distance of 75.71 m. In 2008 he failed again in the qualification at the Olympic Games in Beijing with 73.62 m and was fifth in the World Athletics Final in Stuttgart with 74.19 m . In 2009 he retired at the World Championships in Berlin with 75.10 m in the first round, was eighth in the world finals with a width of 73.61 m and won the silver medal behind Nazarow at the Asian Championships in Guangzhou with 73.45 m. He also won the Arab Championships in Damascus with 76.46 m. In 2010 he was third at the Athletics Continental Cup in Split with 76.43 m and fourth at the Asian Games in Guangzhou with 68.65 m . In 2011, the fourth victory at the Asian Championships in Kobe with 73.73 m followed another preliminary round with 75.35 m at the World Championships in Daegu . He also won with 79.27 m at the Arab Championships in al-Ain and with 73.29 m at the Pan-Arab Games in Doha.

In his third participation in the Olympics, he did not get beyond qualification at the 2012 Olympic Games in London with 73.40 m . The following year he won at the Asian Championships in Pune with 74.70 m silver behind Nazarow and did not start at the World Championships in Moscow . He then won the silver medal behind the Egyptian Mostafa el-Gamel at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Palembang with 76.68 m . In 2014 he finished fifth at the Continental Cup in Marrakech with 72.24 m and fourth at the Asian Games in Incheon with 72.88 m . After two years without international competitions, he became national champion again in 2017 and won the Arab Championships in Cairo in 2019 with 73.49 m. Two weeks later he reached fourth place with 70.91 m at the Asian Championships in Doha.

From 2004 to 2007, as well as 2009 and 2017, al-Zankawi was the Kuwaiti hammer throw champion.
