Jakša Petrić

Jakša Petrić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Јакша Петрић ; * July 1, 1922 in Postira , Kingdom of Yugoslavia ; † 1993 in Zagreb , Croatia ) was a diplomat and politician of the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia (BdKJ) in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRJ), who was Foreign Minister in 1972 and Chairman of the Presidium of the Socialist Republic of Croatia between 1984 and 1985 .

Life

After attending school in 1940, Petrić began studying at the Business Academy in Split . In 1941 he took part in the partisan war, the so-called "National Liberation Struggle of the Peoples of Yugoslavia". In 1942 he joined the illegal Communist Party and after the Second World War in 1945 he became secretary of the district committee of the Communist Party in Split and later secretary of the committee for cinematography.

Petrić then joined the diplomatic service of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1949 and was initially a representative of the SFRY in the People's Socialist Republic of Albania and then between 1949 and 1951 Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York City and temporarily also in the United Nations Security Council Nations . On his return in 1951 he became head of the Anglo-American section in the Foreign Office, then envoy at the embassy in Great Britain and subsequently head of the Asia department in the Foreign Office.

In 1958 Petrić became ambassador to Czechoslovakia and remained at this post until 1961. He then served as Head of the Department for North America, South America, Great Britain and the States of the Commonwealth of Nations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1961 and 1963 and Secretary for International Cooperation and Relations in the Federal Board of the Socialist Alliance of the Working People of Yugoslavia (Социјалистички савез радног народа Југославије) , the largest and most influential mass organization of the SFRY. He was then Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Romania between 1965 and 1969 and then State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 1969 to 1972.

After Mirko Tepavac's impeachment , Petrić became Acting Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs on November 1, 1972 (Савезни секретар за иностране послове) and held this office until he was replaced by Miloš Minić on December 15, 1972. He was then Deputy Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1972 to 1974 and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York City between 1974 and 1978.

In 1978 Petrić became a member of the Presidium of the Socialist Republic of Croatia. On May 10, 1984, he succeeded Milutin Baltić as Chairman of the Presidium of the Socialist Republic of Croatia and thus President of the Republic of Croatia. He held this position until his regular replacement by Pero Car on May 10, 1985.
