Athletics World Cup 1981

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 3rd World Cup in Athletics took place from September 4th to 6th, 1981 in the Olympic Stadium in Rome ( Italy ). 351 athletes from 50 nations took part in the event.

Over the three days, 160,000 spectators came to the stadium to see the success of the team from Europe among the men and the GDR's title defense among the women .

For the men, the favored US team only came third. His undoing was the zero numbers in the discus throw and in the 3000 meter obstacle course as well as the last place in the 100 meter run. For women, after the fall in the 4 x 100 meter relay, the European selection fell significantly behind the GDR.

In the shot put came Udo Beyer and Ilona Slupianek to their third World Cup victories. The American Carl Lewis competed in two disciplines at the same time. After two attempts in the long jump, he started in the 100-meter run, in which he then took last place.
