Madeline Manning
Madeline Manning (born January 11, 1948 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is a former American middle-distance runner and Olympic champion in the 800-meter run .
From 1967 to 1981 she was six times outdoors and four times indoors US champion on her special course and set several American records. In 1967 she won the Universiade and the Pan American Games in Winnipeg .
While she was still studying at Tennessee State University , she won the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 over 800 meters ahead of the Romanian Ileana Silai (silver) and the Dutch Maria Gommers (bronze). At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , she won the silver medal in the 4 x 400 meter relay together with her teammates Mable Fergerson , Cheryl Toussaint and Kathy Hammond and reached the 800 meter semifinals as well as at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . Only the US boycott of the 1980 Games in Moscow prevented them from starting a fourth Olympic Games.
