Karl-Hans Riehm (born May 31, 1951 in Konz ) is a former German athlete .

Starting for the Federal Republic of Germany , he was one of the world's best hammer throwers in the 1970s and 1980s . His greatest achievement was winning the silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles .

Life

At the 1975 Whitsun Sports Festival in Rehlingen-Siersburg ( Saarland ), Riehm managed to stay above the old world record distance of 76.66 m from Alexei Spiridonow in all six litters . After the respective best lengths of 76.70 m and 77.56 m, he finally improved the record to 78.50 m. At a meeting in Heidenheim an der Brenz in 1978 , Karl-Hans Riehm was the second person after Boris Saitschuk to throw the hammer over the 80-meter mark under competitive conditions. With 80.32 m he again set a hammer throw world record.

In 1982 he received the Rudolf Harbig Memorial Prize from the German Athletics Association .

Regarding his increase in performance in the mid-1970s, he explained: “What really helped me advance was the professional training opportunities as a regular soldier. ... In addition, there was the ingenious improvement of the hammer throwing technique devised by my trainer Ernst Klement. We were leaders in the world. "

Karl-Hans Riehm belonged to the TV Germania Trier until 1976 under the coach Ernst Klement , from 1978 to the TV Wattenscheid . In addition to athletics, Riehm also did lawn power sports for many years at RKV Ensdorf / Saar and was thus able to contribute to the success story of this club with a total of three team championships and well over 200 individual titles. Even today he is in the record list of the DRTV (Deutscher Rasenkraftsport- und Tauziehverband) in the senior class 1 over 87 kilograms with a width of 79.44 m, set up for the RKV Ensdorf on May 5, 1984 in Augsburg, as the record holder. When he competed, he was 1.88 m tall and weighed 110 kg.

The interior designer is married, has two children and until 2012 ran the joinery and furniture workshop in Konz, which his father took over .
