Carmen Romero (athlete)

Carmen Romero ( Carmen Romero Ferrer; born October 6, 1950 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a former Cuban discus thrower and shot putter .

Career

In 1966 Romero won bronze at the Central American and Caribbean Games and three years later, in 1969, at the Central American and Caribbean Athletics Championships, gold. At the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1970, she won the discus throw and took bronze in the shot put. In 1971 she achieved a double victory at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in the disciplines of discus throw and shot put. At the Pan American Games in Cali , she triumphed in the discus throw and was fifth in the shot put. Romero was able to defend her title in the discus throw at the 1973 Central American and Caribbean Championships, the 1974 Central American and Caribbean Games and the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico City.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, she finished ninth in the discus throw, but was able to win the discus throw of the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1978 and the Pan American Games in 1979 in San Juan, but for the third time in a row. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, she came in tenth place in the discus throw. Also in the discus throw, she won silver the following year at the Central American and Caribbean Championships and came fourth at the World Athletics Cup in Rome in 1981 , took silver at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1982 and won the Central American and Caribbean Championships in 1983.
