Alice Milliat (born May 5, 1884 in Nantes as Alice Million ; † May 19, 1957 in Paris ) was a French swimmer , hockey player and rower, as well as a sports official and campaigner for women's rights .

Life

As the daughter of wealthy parents (Hyppolite and Joséphine Million), she learned different languages, worked as a French teacher in London and married the businessman Joseph Milliat there when she was 20. However, her husband died after four years and Milliat remained single from then on.

She then played various sports, took part in car races, drove a rowing race over the distance of 80 km and became a member of Fémina Sport Paris , of which she soon became the treasurer and from 1915 also the chairwoman. In this capacity she co-founded the French women's sports federation FSFSF ( Fédération des sociétés féminines sportives de France ) and with it the international women's sports federation FSFI ( Fédération sportive féminine internationale ). She left the association sports scene as early as 1935. Through her pragmatism (contrary to the wishes of the feminists, the German Walter Bergmann became the vice-president of the women's sports association) and the organization of women's world championships since 1921 , she put international, male-dominated sport under pressure and achieved the inclusion of more women’s competitions at the Olympic Games .

Many sports facilities in France bear her name.
