Mikalaj Iwanawitsch Kirau (born November 22, 1957 in Streschin near Homel ) is a former Soviet athlete from Belarus . He had specialized in the middle distance - 800 and 1500 meters . He had been a member of the Soviet national team since 1978 and was coached by Alexander Chernetsky.

- At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , he started over 800 meters. He increased from 1: 47.47 min in the preliminary run (2nd) to 1: 46.53 min in the semifinals (1st) to 1: 45.94 min in the final, where he was behind the two British Steve Ovett (gold in 1: 45.40 min) and Sebastian Coe (silver in 1: 45.85 min) came third and won the bronze medal.

On August 12, 1978 in Podolsk , Kirov set a new world record in the 4 x 800 meter relay race with Vladimir Podoljako , Vladimir Malosemlin and Anatolij Reshetnjak in 7: 08.1 minutes . Before that, the record (7: 08.5 min) had been held for twelve years by a German team of runners. His personal best over 800 meters is given as 1: 45.11 minutes, run in 1981.
Personal
Nikolai Kirov is a graduate of the University of Gomel and its technical center for railway workers. After finishing his active career, he became a teacher at a sports school. He bears the title of "Master of Sports in the International Class". His children were also active in sports: daughter Kristina (born 1980) in athletics, son Nikolai (born 1983) as a rider.
Nikolai Kirov is 1.76 m tall and weighed 63 kg during his active time.
