The 8th European Athletics Cup began in early July with the intermediate round and ended with the A-final on August 15 and 16 in Zagreb, Yugoslavia . For men and women, the German Democratic Republic was able to successfully defend its 1979 title.

mode

In the second round, the 24 teams entered were divided into three groups for men and women. The two first placed went straight to the A final in Zagreb. The third and fourth placed fought in the B final for the last starting place for the A final, for which the host Yugoslavia was automatically qualified.

Intermediate round

The intermediate round took place on July 4th and 5th for the men in Lille ( France ), Warsaw ( Poland ) and Helsinki ( Finland ) and on July 5th for the women in Frankfurt am Main ( Federal Republic of Germany ), Bodø ( Norway ) and Edinburgh ( United Kingdom ).

On August 1st and 2nd the men's B final took place in Athens ( Greece ) and that of the women in Pescara ( Italy ). For the A-final, France was the last to qualify for the men and Poland for the women.

The Maksimir Stadium in 2008

The 8th European Athletics Cup A final took place on August 15 and 16, 1981 in the Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb ( Yugoslavia , today Croatia ) and comprised 35 competitions. The GDR successfully defended its 1979 titles with both men and women before the Soviet Union . Both nations qualified for the taking place in September World Cup in Italy Rome . The sporting highlight was provided by the 18-year-old Bulgarian Antoaneta Todorowa , who set a new world record in the javelin throw with 71.88 m.
