Joseph Mahmoud

Joseph Mahmoud (born December 13, 1955 in Safi ) is a former French athlete of Moroccan origin who mainly competed in the obstacle course .

From 1980 to 1985 he was French champion six times in a row in the 3,000 meter obstacle course, two more titles followed in 1989 and 1992. At the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 , he finished fourth in the obstacle course. The following month he celebrated winning the Mediterranean Games in Casablanca.

Mahmoud achieved the most significant success of his career at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In the obstacle course he won the silver medal in 8: 13.31 min behind the Kenyan Julius Korir (8: 11.80 min) and ahead of the American Brian Diemer (8: 14.06 min). Two weeks later Mahmoud set a world best for the year at the Van Damme Memorial in Brussels with 8: 07.62 minutes. This time was a European record for almost eighteen years before it was beaten in July 2002 by Dutchman Simon Vroemen .

At the World Indoor Athletics Games in Paris in 1985 , Mahmoud finished eighth in the 3,000-meter run and sixth in the obstacle course at the 1986 European Athletics Championships in Stuttgart. In 1989 he won the bronze medal in the obstacle course at the Jeux de la Francophonie . After the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, ​​where he missed the finals in the obstacle course, he ended his active career. He then trained, among other things, the marathon runner Benoît Zwierzchiewski .

Joseph Mahmoud is 1.74 m tall and had a competition weight of 65 kg.
