The 22 Athletics European Cup -Superliga- or A-final was held on 23 and 24 June 2001 at the Weserstadion of Bremen held and included 39 contests.
Originally, Florence provided the venue, but the Italian Athletics Federation FIDAL had problems with the completion of the corresponding stadium and had to return the orientation rights. At its meeting in Vienna on April 15, 2000 , the Council of the European Athletic Association awarded the competitions to the Hanseatic city on the Weser , which had previously prevailed in the national preliminary round against Nuremberg , Ulm and Erfurt . Despite consistently very good weather conditions, the event only met with mediocre response in Bremen. The chairman of the Bremen Athletics Association, which was co-organizing this, estimated that a total of around 28,000 spectators would have attended the competitions in the stadium over the two days. The total TV coverage of the 2001 European Cup was around 36 million TV contacts.

At the same time, the 1st league and the B final met in Vaasa ( Finland ) and Budapest ( Hungary ) and the 2nd league and the C final in Riga ( Latvia ) and Nicosia ( Cyprus ).

German team

The team of the German Athletics Association consisted of 41 athletes and was led by the discus thrower Lars Riedel . The only participant from the host city was the 400-meter runner Lars Figura .

Sporting highlights

As an outstanding sporting highlight, the audience was able to watch the setting of a new European record in the women's pole vault by the Russian athlete Svetlana Feofanova . The victory of the Italian men's 4 x 100 meter relay over the favored team from Great Britain was extremely surprising . As the most successful athlete at the event, the German 400-meter runner Grit Breuer was awarded two gold medals. In the men’s category, Poland took first place in the overall standings for the first time. However, there was a small mistake during the award ceremony when the team was first accidentally presented with the women's trophy. The women's competitions were clearly dominated by the Russians, who alone were able to celebrate seven individual victories. For them it was ( including the time of the Soviet Union ) the tenth victory overall and the fifth in a row.

doping

Due to a positive doping test with the Frenchman Christophe Cheval , the French team lost ten points and was downgraded to 6th place with 87 points.

1 Svetlana Feofanova RussiaRussia RUS 4.60 (ER)
2 Janine Whitlock United KingdomUnited Kingdom GBR 4.34
3 Pavla Hamáčková Czech RepublicCzech Republic CZE 4.34

Date: June 23, 2001

* WR : Stacy Dragila ( USA ) 4.81 m ( Palo Alto , 2001)United StatesUnited States

The initial height was 3.20 m with subsequent increases by 20 centimeters to 3.80 m, after which it was increased in ten-centimeter steps up to 4.20 m. Only at 4.34 m did the reigning European record holder Feofanova - who had already jumped 4.57 m a few days earlier on June 11th in Athens - entered the competition as the last participant. She made her entry height on the second attempt. Then there were some misunderstandings between her and the judges: Feofanowa wanted to skip the 4.40 m mark because Hamáčková and Whitlock both failed and she was left alone in the competition. Due to the failure at 4.34 m, however, she had not yet won. The rules stipulated that in this case an even increase in altitude is made; 4.46 m should follow. Feofanova refused, however, because she wanted a slightly lower altitude. After lengthy discussions, the judges finally let 4.52 m hang up. She jumped this height on the second attempt and had won the competition. As the winner, she was now free to choose her desired height and had the European record of 4.60 m set, which she jumped over.

Fictional medal table

The peculiarity of the European Cup was that women and men were rated separately. The following medal table is therefore purely fictional.
