Poiana Brașov (German Schulerau , Hungarian Brassópojána ) is one of the most famous winter sports resorts in Romania . The place is above the city of Brașov ( Kronstadt ) at the foot of the Postăvarul mountain ( Schuler , 1799 m), which marks the border between the southern and eastern Carpathians .

history

The term “insula vulgo Awe” (“Schulerau”) first appeared in writing in the 1532–1535 “Schaffner Bills”, which were published in the “Sources for the history of the city of Kronstadt”. The “Schaffner Bills” record payments to workers who carried out repair work on the “Saumweg” in Schulerau between 1534 and 1535. This work took place on the recommendation of the then King of Hungary Johann Zápolya , on the occasion of a reception in Kronstadt for Stephan Majlath, who was appointed Voivod of Transylvania in 1534 . In August 1535 he stayed for three days in Schulerau with family members and friends at the city's expense. The invoices that have survived to this day bear witness to this.

Development of tourism

The first hotel was the Hotel Sportul, built in 1950/51 to accommodate athletes at the International University Winter Games. The party organ ( party newspaper ) of the SED " Neues Deutschland " described the competitions as the World Winter Games.

The Sportul suffered severe damage in a fire in 1959 and was rebuilt. In 1959 and 1960 it was still called Hotelul Turistic in Poiana Stalin. In GDR-German the small settlement was called Poiana-Stalinstadt.

Chairlift with double seat to Postăvarul (1964)

The hotel itself was designed from a very modern point of view. The outer wall is made of natural stones and the balcony side faces south. The hotel also has a modern terrace. The rooms all have hot and cold running water and a shower. Smyrna rugs lay in the corridors and in the rooms . The hotel had two dining rooms, the upper one being the more elegant. Inside it were red and green plush chairs on the marble floor . At dinner a 6-man band played German tunes and afterwards this band also played for dancing. The sports hotel now bears the name Ana Hotels Sport (2019).

Since the chairlift to Postăvarul (Schuler) had already been built in 1951 for the International Winter Games, Poiana Brașov was well developed for mountain hikers. In 27 minutes you could comfortably climb 800 meters in altitude with the chairlift with double seat .

Mountain bus at the sports hotel in Poiana Brașov (1964)

Only when the national road 1E between Brașov and Poiana Brașov had been completed, cars and coaches could drive to the mountain town. The inauguration of the new road took place in December 1964, although no sections were finished in July 1964. Until then, only several open trucks of the type SR (Steagul-Roșu) with benches operated for passenger transport . These vehicles corresponded to the Soviet ZIS-150 and were built in the Roman S. A. plant , the Steagul-Roșu plant ("Red Flag Plant") in Brașov on the site of the former ROMLOC locomotive factory.

This passenger transport truck had rubber tires in summer and in winter you had to attach at least snow chains or wheel sets with crawlers . However, the vehicle was very powerful. The narrow road to Poiana Brașov had many potholes and was only designed for horse-drawn vehicles. A trip with this mountain vehicle from Brașov to Poiana Brașov took about 35 minutes in the summer. The travel agency vacationers from the GDR called these mountain buses “Schrecki” and every trip was an ordeal. This vehicle had to be used on arrival and departure and also in the rain.

In 1970 the Hotel Teleferec was built near the valley station of the chairlift. The hotel, like the Sporthotel, had an excellent kitchen and a large number of wines were available.

The number of visitors to Poiana Brașov rose sharply as a result of the new street in Brașov and the two hospitable hotels.

Winter sports area

Poiana Brașov has a long tradition as a ski resort. Romania's first ski competition was held here in 1906. In 1951 the International University Winter Games took place in Poiana Brașov . In recent years, new hotels and accommodations have been built and modernized here.

The place offers a good winter sports infrastructure, including Olympic downhill slopes and cross-country trails . Two cabin cable cars and a gondola cable car as well as six drag lifts lead up the mountain. There are numerous hotels, and the city of Brașov, about 15 km away, can be easily reached by public transport (bus / taxi). It is also possible to reach the city of Râșnov ( Rosenau ), about 11 km away, in a north-westerly direction .

A NATO summit was held here in October 2004 .
