Yevgeny Gennadjewitsch Pechonkin ( Russian Евгений Геннадьевич Печёнкин , English transcription Yevgeniy Pechonkin ; born October 9, 1973 in Krasnodar ) is a Russian bobsledder and former hurdler , whose specialty was the 110-meter distance .
athletics
In 1992 he won the gold medal as a member of the United Team at the World Junior Athletics Championships in Seoul . In addition, he also took part in the long jump and secured fifth place. At the World Athletics Championships in 1993 in Stuttgart, however, he was eliminated in the preliminary run in fifth place with a time of 13.85 s.
In 1996 he won the silver medal in the European Athletics Cup, which was designed as a team competition. In the same year he was eliminated from the Atlanta Olympics with 13.86 seconds as fifth in the run. At the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1998 in Valencia he was sixth in the 60 m hurdles .
At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 he reached the semifinals, but did not progress there with 13.62 s in seventh place. In 2001 he won the gold medal at the European Cup in Bremen . Only a few weeks later he finished sixth in the finals at the World Championships in Edmonton with 13.52 s.
In 2002 he came third at the European Indoor Championships in the 60 m hurdles in Vienna , but was subsequently disqualified because he had tested positive for the substance norandrosterone (a metabolite of the anabolic steroid nandrolone ) during a doping control carried out recently , and because of this Suspended for two years in violation of doping regulations .
Pechonkin's last major competition was in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. In the quarter-finals he ran the distance in 13.53 s and just missed the next round in fifth.
Bobsleigh
In 2005, Pechonkin switched to winter sports as a bobsleigh pusher , for which he increased his competition weight from 85 to 104 kg. His only podium finish to date was in the 2007/2008 World Cup season , when he took second place in the fourth race in Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Russian four-man bobsleigh of pilot Alexander Subkow . Less than a month later, he also finished tenth in the four-man bobsleigh at the 2008 Bobsleigh World Championship in Altenberg.
Private
Until 2006, Pechonkin was married to Julija Pechonkina , a former Russian 400-meter hurdler, world champion and current world record holder for this distance .
