The 18th European Athletics Cup Super League final took place on June 21 and 22, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in Munich ( Germany ). As pole vault and hammer throw were now also carried out by women, the competition comprised 39 disciplines (20 men, 19 women).
More than 50,000 spectators were present when Linford Christie , the "Mr. Europe Cup", said goodbye after 10 years and crowned it with a European Cup record by setting his own record over 100 meters in 10.04 seconds.
In addition, the 25th anniversary of the 1972 Olympic Park was celebrated with an attractive festival program for young and old.
