Harry Lee "Butch" Reynolds Jr. (Born June 8, 1964 in Akron , Ohio ) is a former American athlete who specialized in the 400-meter run . He is an Olympic champion and three-time world champion.

Life

Reynolds started athletics at the age of 12. He attended the private Catholic Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron before accepting an athletic scholarship from Ohio State University . He finished his studies in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in education . In 1995 he founded the Care For Kids Foundation , which every summer provides around 500 children with fun activities through sport. Since it has been possible to be a coach and athlete in the same sport in the USA since 1978, he was assistant coach for athletics from 1996 to 1998 and assistant coach for the football team of his alma mater from 2005 to 2008 . Since 2008 he has been the track and field assistant coach for the Catholic Dominican- founded OHIO DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY in Columbus , Ohio .

Athletic career

At the Sportfest Weltklasse Zürich on August 17, 1988, Reynolds set a world record of 43.29 seconds in the 400-meter run , which was only broken by Michael Johnson in 1999 .

Shortly afterwards he won the silver medal in the 400 meters at the Olympic Games in Seoul , between his compatriots Steve Lewis and Danny Everett , and the team gold medal in the 4-by-400-meter relay , together with Danny Everett, Steve Lewis and Kevin Robinzine , in front of the teams from Jamaica and Germany .

In 1990 he was banned from the IAAF for two years for doping with nandrolone . The accusation could not be upheld in court due to a laboratory error. Harry Reynolds first filed for compensation in a US court. However, this was rejected by a higher court in the appeal process.

At the World Championships in Stuttgart in 1993 and in Gothenburg in 1995 , he won silver over 400 meters and gold in the 4 x 400 meter relay.

Reynolds was known for his upright and steady running style, in which he tilted his head extremely into the curve. He is also one of the few African Americans with blue eyes.
