Konstantin Jurjewitsch Wolkow ( Russian Константин Юрьевич Волков , English transcription Konstantin Volkov ; born February 28, 1960 in Irkutsk ) is a former Soviet pole vaulter and politician.

Life

Konstantin Wolkow started for the Lokomotiv Irkutsk association and weighed around 75 kg with a height of 1.84 m at competition times. With his personal best of 5.85 m on June 22, 1984 in Kiev, he was still in the top 50 of the world's best pole vaulters in 2010.

At the European Indoor Championships in Sindelfingen in 1980 , he secured the title in front of his compatriot Vladimir Polyakov with 5.60 m . Wolkow had his greatest success at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow by winning the silver medal together with the Pole Tadeusz Ślusarski behind his compatriot Władysław Kozakiewicz . He crossed 5.65 m in the fifth attempt, Kozakiewicz jumped the world record with 5.78 m. In this famous competition, the Soviet audience tried to unfairly disturb the two Poles during the competition with chants, whistles and boos and thus help Volkov to win the Olympic gold medal. After his victory, Kozakiewicz “thanked” the audience with a gesture known as gest Kozakiewicza , while Volkov was second. In 1982, in Milan, Volkov won silver for the second time at the European Indoor Championships in 1982 after 1979 . In 1983 he drove for the Soviet team alongside the then world record holder Polyakov and Sergei Bubka as a promising candidate for the first world championships in Helsinki. In addition, the French Thierry Vigneron and Pierre Quinon were favorites. The young Bubka surprisingly prevailed with 5.70 m and relegated Wolkow (5.60 m) to second place. Although he could not win in the big competitions, he was victorious twice, in 1981 and 1983, at the Universiade .

Volkov graduated from the State Institute of Physical Culture ( ГИФК Государственной институт физической культуры ) in Omsk . In 1981 he was named the Honored Master of Sports of the USSR . After his sporting career, he completed an engineering degree at the State University of Transportation (IrGUPS) ( Иркутский государственный университет путей сообщения (ИрГУПС) ) in Irkutsk. From 1986 to 1991 he worked as a pole vault trainer in his hometown of Irkutsk. From 2001 to 2004 he was General Director of the Trans-Siberian Freight Company, from 2006 to 2008 Deputy General Director of the Siberian Metal Company . After a year as manager at Monolitstroi-Irkutsk , he was in 2009 as the successor to Boris Pusynja Minister for Physical Culture, Sports and Youth of the Irkutsk Oblast .
