Alexander Awerbuch
Alexander Awerbuch ( Russian Александр Валерьевич Авербух , Alexander Valerjewitsch Awerbuch, Hebrew אלכסנדר אברבוך, engl. Transcription by Aleksandr Averbukh ; * October 1, 1974 in Irkutsk ) is an Israeli athlete of Russian origin.
Like his father, Alexander Awerbuch was initially a decathlete - with a best performance of 8084 points (1997). At the European Indoor Championships in 1998, Awerbuch started for Russia in the all-around competition and finished 6th.
He emigrated to Israel and became a citizen of Israel on August 3, 1999. Since then he started in the pole vault. In his first outing for Israel, the 1999 World Championships in Seville , he won the bronze medal (5.80 m). In 2000 he was European indoor champion and tenth at the Olympic Games in Sydney .
In 2001 he finished fourth at the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon . At the World Championships in Edmonton , he won silver behind Dmitri Markov (also Ex-Russian, now starting for Australia) and gold at the Universiade .
Awerbuch won his first outdoor title at the European Championships in Munich in 2002 with a height of 5.85 m. In 2003 he set his personal record with 5.93 m (also the Israeli record), and at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he finished eighth.
At the 2006 World Indoor Championships in Moscow he was fourth again and at the European Championships in Gothenburg he defended his title. In Osaka at the 2007 World Championships , he came seventh.
Alexander Awerbuch has a competition weight of 76 kg with a height of 1.78 m.
