Rothschild house

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rothschildhaus is the design of a hunting or forest building from the turn of the century, especially a manor house that occurs in the Langau - Rothwald - Dürrenstein wilderness area in Eisenwurzen in Lower Austria . The name goes back to the owners and builders of the houses, the Rothschild family , who owned extensive forest and forest estates around the Dürrenstein. After his death in 1874, Anselm von Rothschild left his sons Albert, Ferdinand and Nathaniel a huge fortune. Albert took over the banking business as the main heir. Together with his wife Bettina, the Baron Albert Rothschild was a very benevolent person, he left behind a redesigned castle and many technical innovations (electric power plant in the castle park) in Waidhofen. Albert was also an honorary citizen of the Waidhofen.

Waidhofen Castle on the Ybbs

With the purchase of the rule Gaming and Waidhofen , Albert von Rothschild's neo-Gothic building activity began, with which he commissioned the cathedral master builder Friedrich von Schmidt.

Friedrich von Schmidt , master builder of the St. Stephan building works in Vienna, has made a name for himself as a restorer of medieval castles and builder of neo-Gothic buildings (Votive Church and City Hall in Vienna). He mainly worked on the expansion of the inner courtyard and the construction of the Stöckl building. Louis Rothschild , Albert's son, had the castle redesigned with French furniture and the castle park with walking paths. It served as a residence and the headquarters of the forest administration in Waidhofen.

Numerous houses belonging to the Rothschild rulership between the villages of Lackenhof and Langau bei Gaming were built in the Swiss chalet style at the end of the 19th century (forest management, post office, locksmith's shop, hunting lodge, etc.). They are now over 100 years old.

Carlo von Boog designed the pavilion in the mental hospital Mauer for the severely disabled son of Albert and Bettina. This gem was canceled in 1975.

Atschreith hunting villa

In 1905, Albert had the architect Carlo von Boog build a hunting villa in Atschreith with various farm buildings and houses for the employees. During the Nazi era, the villa was used as an NS guest house. Today it belongs to the Umdasch family, who operate the hunting areas as a company for recreation and business invitations.

Properties at the foot of the Dürrenstein between Langau and Neuhaus with attached guest houses and farm buildings became the favorite place of the Rothschild family. Today they are used as holiday apartments.

Social role

The Rothschild family played an important role in social works and buildings in the Mostviertel . The forest and sawmill workers received their own pension fund and regular retirement benefits. Baroness Bettina had a children's home built in Göstling for the children of the forest workers . In Gaming, the family built a retirement home for former Rothschild forest workers who were unable to work. The family repeatedly contributed through donations to alleviate the suffering of the population, for the common good and for infrastructural measures in the city. A separate "Rothschild Forestry Administration Langau" fire department was responsible for fire protection and security. In the Langau area, the Rothschild family is still remembered with respect and gratitude.
