Albert Freiherr von Rothschild

Albert Salomon Anselm Freiherr von Rothschild (born October 29, 1844 in Vienna ; † February 11, 1911 ibid) was the youngest son of Anselm Salomon Freiherr von Rothschild and Charlotte von Rothschild. After the death of his father, he took over the management of the Rothschild Bank in Vienna and became one of the most important representatives of the Austrian branch of the banking family.

Life

Albert von Rothschild attended a grammar school in Vienna and studied at Bonn University , then he worked in a bank in Hamburg. In 1874 he took over the management of the Rothschild Bank in Vienna from his father. He also had control of the privately owned Austrian Credit Institution for Trade and Commerce (CA) and expanded it to become the largest bank in Austria-Hungary . He was the builder of the Palais Albert Rothschild in Vienna.

His brother was Nathaniel Meyer von Rothschild , who had little interest in banking and was primarily devoted to art and photography, which was still new at the time, and who also appeared as a patron and philanthropist; Nathaniel Meyer von Rothschild's Viennese palace was located in the immediate vicinity of Albert's palace.

Rothschild was considered the richest European in 1910 with an estimated fortune of one billion crowns. Among other things, the family named the Palais Heugasse 24–26, Theresianumgasse 14–16, Plösslgasse 8 in Vienna and the castles in Langau , Enzesfeld, Schillersdorf , Beneschau, Reichenau and the one established in 1875 for the management of the extensive Rothschild lands in the region and in 1881 Rothschild Castle in Waidhofen an der Ybbs was redesigned in the neo-Gothic style , as well as the Rothwald , the largest contiguous primeval forest area in Central Europe.

In 1876 he had married Bettina Caroline de Rothschild (1858-1892), daughter of Alphonse de Rothschild . The asteroid (250) Bettina was named after her, and he bought the naming rights for £ 50. The following children were born from the marriage:

Palace of Baron Albert von Rothschild, Vienna Heugasse 26
  1. Georg Anselm Alphonse von Rothschild (1877–1934), unmarried, buried in the Central Cemetery in Vienna
  2. Alphonse Maier von Rothschild (1878–1942)
  3. Charlotte Esther von Rothschild (1879–1885)
  4. Louis Nathaniel von Rothschild (1882–1955), took over the business of Creditanstalt in 1911
  5. Eugène Daniel von Rothschild (1884–1976)
  6. Valentine Noémi von Rothschild (1886–1969)
  7. Oskar Ruben von Rothschild (1888–1909), unmarried, suicide, buried at the Central Cemetery in Vienna

After the untimely death of his wife, Rothschild devoted himself above all to his art collection, astronomy and photography, as well as social and charitable causes such as the Bettina Foundation, the Rothschild Hospital , the Museum of Applied Arts, etc. He also inherited the palace and the art collection of his brother Nathaniel, who died childless . After his death, the collection was divided among his sons Alphonse, Louis and Eugène.

Rothschild was a passionate chess player and worked extensively as a chess patron. From 1872 he was president and patron of the Vienna Chess Society and the subsequent Vienna Chess Club (from 1897) , which he headed until his death.

The Cupid asteroid (719) Albert , discovered on October 3, 1911 , was named after him posthumously, but was lost soon afterwards and was not found again until 2000.
