The Palais (Albert) Rothschild was a building in Vienna, built between 1879 and 1884 and demolished in 1954 . It was located at Prinz-Eugen-Strasse 20-22 in the 4th district of Vienna, Wieden . It should not be confused with the smaller Palais Rothschild, which still exists today, at No. 26 on the same street.

history

The palace was built from 1879 to 1884 according to plans by the French architect Gabriel-Hippolyte Destailleur and served Albert Salomon Anselm Freiherr v. Rothschild (1844–1911), the leading representative of the Viennese branch of the famous Jewish Rothschild banking family , as the city palace. The building, in the style of the French neo-Renaissance , was characterized by a particularly impressive staircase, on the walls there were valuable tapestries , in the ballroom and the salons there were ceiling paintings by Jean de Witt and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo , and the furnishings were in the Louis XVI style held.

The palace was confiscated by the Nazi regime in March 1938 after Austria was " annexed " to the German Reich and temporarily housed the " Central Office for Jewish Emigration " under Adolf Eichmann and later other Nazi agencies. The palace survived the Second World War without any significant bomb damage. In 1947 his owner at the time, Louis Nathaniel von Rothschild , decided to leave the restituted building to the Republic of Austria with the establishment of a pension fund for his former employees. However, the federal government had no use for the valuable object from the Ringstrasse era and began demolition work in 1954. Today there is an office building of the Vienna Chamber of Labor built between 1957 and 1960 based on a design by the architect Franz Mörth .

In the vicinity of this palace, namely at Theresianumgasse 14-16, was the palace of Albert's brother Nathaniel Meyer von Rothschild , which now also houses an office building for the Vienna Chamber of Labor .

The rich collection was restituted by the family and heirs in 1999. The Rothschild family and above all the heiress Bettina Looram-Rothschild as niece of Baron Louis von Rothschild and daughter of Baron Alphonse and Baroness Clarice von Rothschild received back 250 art objects or 239 catalog numbers. On July 8, 1999, they were auctioned at Christie's, a total of 224 items for a record £ 57.7 million.
