Helmut Schreiber (born June 26, 1955 in Heidenheim an der Brenz ) is a former German athlete who has been successful in javelin throwing since the 1970s .
Athletic career
After initial successes as an all-rounder, he specialized in javelin throwing under coach Hans Knoth and became German youth champion in 1973. At the European Championships in Prague in 1978 , he was fifth (76.66 m - 71.84 m - 82.84 m - 77.88 m - 82.48 m - 83.58 m). A year later he won the Universiade in Mexico City with 88.68 m. On September 21, 1980 he started the "Eight Nations Cup" in Tokyo and won with 87.66 m ahead of Olympic champion Dainis Kūla . At the European Cup qualification in 1979 in Ulm, he threw even more with 92.72 m. In the top ten list of the German Athletics Association (DLV) with the old spear (before 1986), Schreiber is in fifth place with this width. He became German champion in 1981 , in 1980 he was second in the world best list, but missed the Moscow Olympic Games because of the boycott of Western countries . At the Universiade held in Edmonton in 1983 , he secured his second international medal with silver. Shortly before the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles (USA), he ended his athletics career after he was unable to qualify due to an injury.
Professional career
After passing high school in 1972, Schreiber went to Mannheim (until 1977) and then to Heidelberg, where he studied medicine and psychology. From 2000 he was a DLV team doctor and looked after the athletes at three Olympic Games, four world championships, three European championships, numerous indoor world and European championships as well as at nine universities. In 2014, the specialist in orthopedics was awarded the additional designation of sports medicine and chiropractic as " Sports Doctor of the Year".
