The Balsapuerto district is located in the Alto Amazonas province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. The district has an area of 2907 km². At the 2017 census, there were 16,084 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 9162, in 2007 13,868. The administrative center is the 220 m high on the left bank of the Río Cachiyacu, a right tributary of the Rìo Paranapura , located Balsapuerto with 1158 inhabitants (as of 2017). Balsapuerto is 50 km west-northwest of the provincial capital of Yurimagua .
Geographical location
The district of Balsapuerto is located on the eastern flank of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera on the western edge of the Peruvian Amazon region in the far west of the Alto Amazonas province. The Río Paranapura drains the area east to the Río Huallaga .
The district of Balsapuerto borders in the northwest with the district Cahuapanas ( province Datem del Marañón ), in the northeast with the district Jeberos , in the east with the district Yurimaguas , in the south with the districts Caynarachi , San Roque de Cumbaza and Pinto Recodo (all three in the Province of Lamas ) and in the southwest to the district of Moyobamba ( Province of Moyobamba ).
