The province of Lamas is one of ten provinces in the San Martín region of northern Peru . It has an area of ​​5040.67 km². The 2017 census counted 81,521 inhabitants in the province. In 1993 the population was 67,253, in 2007 79,075. The provincial administration is located in the small town of Lamas .

Geographical location

The province of Lamas is located in the north of the San Martín region west of the Río Huallaga . The province has a longitudinal extension in east-west direction of 90 km. A ridge of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera runs through the province in a north-northwest direction. West of the ridge, the Río Mayo flows south to the Río Huallaga. The Amazon lowlands extend east of the ridge .

The province of Lamas borders in the north on the province Alto Amazonas ( region Loreto ), in the east and southeast on the province San Martín , in the south on the province Picota , in the southwest on the province El Dorado and in the north-west on the province Moyobamba .

Administrative division

The province of Lamas is divided into eleven districts. The Lamas district is the seat of the provincial administration.
