The Mariscal Cáceres Province is one of ten provinces in the San Martín region in northern Peru . The province, founded in 1940, was named after Andrés Avelino Cáceres (1836–1923), two-time President of Peru. The province has an area of 14,498.73 km². The 2017 census counted 64,626 inhabitants in the province. In 1993 the population was 49,798, in 2007 it was 50,884. The provincial administration is located in the small town of Juanjuí .
Geographical location
The province of Mariscal Cáceres is located in the west of the San Martín region and extends over the eastern flank of the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The province has a longitudinal extension in NNW-SSE direction of about 145 km and an average width of 80 km. The watershed runs along the western provincial border to the Río Marañón , which flows further west . The Río Abiseo , left tributary of the Río Huallaga , drains almost the entire area. The extreme southeast of the province is traversed by the Río Huallaga. In the southwest of the province lies the Río Abiseo National Park .
The province of Mariscal Cáceres borders in the north on the province of Rodríguez de Mendoza ( Amazon region ), in the north-east on the province of Huallaga , in the east on the province of Bellavista , in the south-east on the province of Tocache , in the west on the provinces of Pataz and Bolívar (both in the La Libertad region ) and in the northwest to the Chachapoyas province (Amazon region).
Administrative division
The Mariscal Cáceres Province is divided into five districts. The Juanjuí district is the seat of the provincial administration.
