The Picota Province is one of ten provinces in the San Martín Region in northern Peru . It has an area of 2171.41 km². The 2017 census counted 40,545 inhabitants in the province. In 1993 the population was 26,955, in 2007 37,721. The provincial administration is located in the small town of Picota .
Geographical location
The province of Picota is in the east of the San Martín region, on both sides of the Río Huallaga , which flows through the province in a north-northeast direction. The province is flanked to the east and west by low ridges of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera . The province has a longitudinal extension in east-west direction of about 50 km and an average width of about 35 km.
The province of Picota borders the provinces of Lamas and San Martín in the north, the province of Ucayali ( Loreto region ) in the east, the province of Bellavista in the south and west and the province of El Dorado in the north-west .

The province of Picota is divided into ten districts. The Picota district is the seat of the provincial administration.
