The province of Rioja is one of ten provinces in the San Martín region in northern Peru . It has an area of 2535.04 km². The 2017 census counted 122,544 inhabitants in the province. In 1993 the population was 69,787, in 2007 104,882. The provincial administration is located in the small town of Rioja .
Geographical location
The province of Rioja is located in the northwest of the San Martín region. A ridge of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera with the Cerro de Campanario runs along the western provincial border. Along the eastern provincial border, the upper reaches of the Río Mayo flows in a south-easterly direction. The province has a lengthwise extension in NW-SE direction of about 108 km and a maximum width of about 40 km.
The province of Rioja borders the province of Moyobamba to the east and the provinces of Rodríguez de Mendoza , Chachapoyas and Bongará (all three in the Amazon region ) to the west .

The province of Rioja is divided into nine districts. The Rioja district is the seat of the provincial administration.
