The Nueva Cajamarca district is located in the Rioja province of the San Martín region in the central north of Peru . The district founded on December 21, 1984 has an area of 334 km². In the 2017 census, there were 43,476 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 21,207, in 2007 35,718. The district administration is located in the 875 m high town of Nueva Cajamarca with 25,812 inhabitants (as of 2017). Nueva Cajamarca is 40 km west-northwest of the regional capital Moyobamba . The national road 5N from Moyobamba to Bagua runs through the district.
Geographical location
The Nueva Cajamarca district is located in the southwest of the Rioja province. The district lies in a basin landscape between the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the west and the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera in the east. The rivers Río Soritor and Río Yuracyacu, both tributaries of the Río Mayo , flow through the district in a northeasterly and easterly direction.
The Nueva Cajamarca district borders in the northwest and north on the Awajún district , in the northeast on the San Fernando and Yuracyacu districts , in the southeast on the Elías Soplín Vargas district and in the southwest on the Vista Alegre district ( Rodríguez de Mendoza province ).
