The Elías Soplín Vargas district is located in the Rioja province of the San Martín region in the central north of Peru . The district was established on December 16, 1984. It bears the name of Elías Soplín Vargas, a Peruvian war hero who died near Güepí in the Colombian-Peruvian War in 1933.
The district has an area of 199.64 km² (according to other sources 169 km²). At the 2017 census, there were 17,661 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 5198, in 2007 it was 9767. The district administration is located in the 825 m high city of Segunda Jerusalem with 14,884 inhabitants (as of 2017). Segunda Jerusalén is located 35 km west-northwest of the regional capital Moyobamba . The national road 5N from Moyobamba to Bagua runs through the district.
Geographical location
The Elías Soplín Vargas district is located in the southwest of the Rioja province. The district lies in a basin landscape between the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the west and the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera in the east. The Río Negro, a tributary of the Río Mayo , flows north along the eastern district boundary.
The Elías Vargas Soplin district is bordered to the west and northwest on the district Nueva Cajamarca , in the northeast on the district Yuracyacu , on the east by the district Rioja and on the southwest by the district Vista Alegre ( Rodríguez de Mendoza Province ).
