The Colombian-Peruvian War was an armed conflict between the two South American states in the years 1932–1934. The reason was border disputes over the Amazon port of Leticia in the Tres Fronteras area . Because of the theater of war, the conflict is also known as the Leticia War .
After over 300 Peruvian armed civilians besieged the port of Leticias on September 1, 1932 , Colombia dispatched 1,500 soldiers to the uprising against the demarcation of the boundaries laid down in the 1922 Treaty of Salomón-Lozano . As a result, Peru, which had initially condemned the uprising, also sent units to protect the insurgents.
The first skirmishes in the Amazon began in early 1933 when the Colombian river fleet made its way to the city. After months of diplomatic struggle to find a mutually acceptable solution, the warring parties concluded a provisional armistice in May 1933 and agreed to the provisional administration of the area by the League of Nations until a final peace agreement was reached.
After a bilateral agreement in May 1934, Leticia was returned to Colombia in July. The treaty provided for the demilitarization of the area and guaranteed Peru free access to the Amazon and Río Putumayo . Likewise were inches - and trade agreements closed and transport legal issues of river navigation clarified. In return, the Salomón-Lozano Treaty was reaffirmed and Peru issued a formal apology for the invasion in September 1932. The Brazilian mediator Cândido Rondon was also involved in the conclusion of this peace treaty .
