Hermann Joseph Hiery
Hermann Joseph Hiery (born April 17, 1957 in Saarlouis ) is a German historian , East Asia and Pacific researcher and professor of modern history at the University of Bayreuth .
Live and act
Hiery grew up in Waldkraiburg in Upper Bavaria and attended in Mühldorf the school . In 1984 he received his doctorate under Hans Fenske at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg to Dr. phil. and worked in an academic bookstore. From 1985 to 1987 he taught at a Catholic university (Divine Word University) in Madang , Papua New Guinea . Since then he has been particularly concerned with the German colonial era in the South Seas . He completed his habilitation in 1993 at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg with his work on The German Empire in the South Seas , published in 1995 .
From 1991 to 1996 he was a research fellow at the German Historical Institute in London . Since 1996 he has been Professor of Modern History at the University of Bayreuth with the research area “ German Colonial History ”.
As a historian and Pacific explorer, numerous, z. Some years of teaching and research stays in Madang (Papua New Guinea), Samoa , Fiji , Australia and New Zealand . He is the author of several books on German colonial history and editor of the Yearbook for European Overseas History .
Hiery was chairman of the Society for Overseas History eV (GÜSG) until 2015, is a member of the Academia Europaea , liaison lecturer and member (curator) of the selection committee for scholarship holders of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and was a long-time member of the board of trustees of the Wolf-Erich-Kellner- Memorial foundation .
Political commitment
During his studies, Hiery was active as a co-founder of the liberal college group.
As FDP - politician he was involved in a citizens' initiative for the resumption of rail traffic on the route Bayreuth-Weidenberg . In 2009 he founded the FDP local association Fichtelgebirge , of which he is chairman. The association includes the communities of the Fichtelgebirge as well as Bindlach , Goldkronach , Speichersdorf and Weidenberg . 2014 he was the candidate of the FDP in the district election of district Bayreuth , reaching a vote share of 5.7 percent. In January 2016 he criticized the federal government's refugee policy . He was the only one to vote in a district council meeting against the establishment of a round table in the district and advocated the resignation of the Chancellor , whom he described as "resistant to advice".
Hiery is running again in the district election 2020. He speaks u. a. for the appointment of an ombudsman and the conversion of the railway to Weidenberg to fuel cell operation . When asked about his visions for the district, he replied: "Anyone who has visions should go to a psychiatrist". With regard to climate change , he stated that it could no longer be prevented. Therefore one has to find pragmatic approaches to dealing with its consequences. It is already too late for climate protection measures .
Private
Hiery is married and has four children. Since 1996 he has lived with his wife in a village near Weidenberg.
