Horst founder (born February 7, 1939 in Teplitz-Schönau ) is a German historian and was professor for modern and contemporary as well as non-European history at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster from 1984 to 2004 . His focus is the German colonial history .

life and work

After studying German , history, pedagogy , psychology and philosophy in Würzburg and Münster , the 1st and 2nd state exams followed in Detmold and Bielefeld and in 1973 the doctorate to Dr. phil. with a dissertation on Walter Simons . In 1981 he received his habilitation in Münster under Heinz Gollwitzer with the text Christian Mission and German Imperialism. A political history of their relations during the German colonial period (1884–1914) with a special focus on Africa and China . Since 1984 he was initially an adjunct professor at the University of Münster , after which he held a professorship for non-European history.

Founder's interests are particularly in comparative European colonial and overseas history, above all the relationship between mission and colonialism, German colonial history and the relationship between state and church. His work History of the German Colonies is the standard work on the subject. He was a scientific advisor to the three-part ZDF television documentaries "German Colonies" (2005) and " Das Weltreich der Deutschen " (2010). He has also compiled a collection of sources for school use on imperialism .

The founder is an honorary member and advisory board of the Society for Overseas History eV (GÜSG).

In 1974 he was awarded the Wolf-Erich-Kellner Prize .
