The Rioja District is located in the Rioja Province of the San Martín Region in the central north of Peru . The district has an area of 185.7 km² (according to other sources 209 km²). At the 2017 census, there were 25,521 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 18,632, in 2007 22,290. The district and provincial administration is located in the 848 m high city of Rioja with 22,080 inhabitants (as of 2017). Rioja is 22 km west of the regional capital Moyobamba . The national road 5N from Moyobamba to Bagua runs through the district.
Geographical location
The Rioja District is located in the south of the Rioja Province. The district lies in a basin landscape between the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the west and the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera in the east. The Río Negro, a tributary of the Río Mayo , flows north along the western district boundary.
The Rioja district is bordered to the west by the Elías Soplín Vargas district , to the extreme north by the Yuracyacu district , to the northeast by the Posic district , to the east by the Calzada and Habana districts (both in the Moyobamba province ), and to the southeast by the Yorongos district and in the southwest to the Vista Alegre district ( Rodríguez de Mendoza province ).
