The Huallaga Province is one of ten provinces in the San Martín region in northern Peru . It has an area of 2380.85 km². The 2017 census counted 27,506 inhabitants in the province. In 1993 the population was 22,236, in 2007 24,448. The provincial administration is located in the small town of Saposoa .
Geographical location
The province of Huallaga is located in the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera . It extends over the catchment area of the Río Saposoa , a left tributary of the Río Huallaga . It extends in the south to the Río Huallaga. The province has a longitudinal extent in NNW-SSE direction of about 110 km and an average width of about 28 km.
The province of Huallaga borders the province of Moyobamba in the north, the province of El Dorado in the northeast, the province of Bellavista in the southeast , the province of Mariscal Cáceres in the south and west and the province of Rodríguez de Mendoza ( Amazon region ) in the northwest .
Administrative division
Huallaga Province is divided into six districts. The district of Saposoa is the seat of the provincial administration.
