The province of El Dorado is one of ten provinces in the San Martín region in northern Peru . It has an area of ​​1298.14 km². The 2017 census counted 36,752 inhabitants in the province. In 1993 the population was 23,409, in 2007 33,638. The provincial administration is located in the small town of San José de Sisa .

Geographical location

The province of El Dorado is located in the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera . It extends over the catchment area of the Río Sisa , a left tributary of the Río Huallaga .

The province of El Dorado borders the province of Lamas in the northeast, the province of Picota in the east, the province of Bellavista in the south, the province of Huallaga in the west and the province of Moyobamba in the northwest .

Administrative division

The province of El Dorado is divided into five districts. The district of San José de Sisa is the seat of the provincial administration.
