The province of Tocache is one of ten provinces in the San Martín region in northern Peru . It has an area of 5865.44 km². The 2017 census counted 69,394 inhabitants in the province. In 1993 the population was 70,523, in 2007 72,346. The provincial administration is located in the city of Tocache .
Geographical location
The province of Tocache is located in the southwest of the San Martín region. It extends along an approximately 140 km long section of the lower Huallaga River . It covers part of the eastern flank of the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The catchment area of the Río Tocache , left tributary of the Río Huallaga, lies entirely within the provincial area.
The province of Tocache borders in the north on the province of Mariscal Cáceres , in the northeast on the province of Bellavista , in the south on the provinces Leoncio Prado and Marañón (both in the Huánuco region ) and in the west on the Pataz ( region La Libertad ).
Administrative division
Tocache Province is divided into five districts. The district of Tocache is the seat of the provincial administration.
