The Nuevo Progreso district is located in the Tocache Province in the San Martín region in northern Peru . The district was established on December 6, 1984. It has an area of 826 km². At the 2017 census, there were 12,247 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 9209, in 2007 it was 12,247. The district administration is located in the small town of Nuevo Progreso at an altitude of 490 m with 3677 inhabitants (as of 2017). Nuevo Progreso is located on the right bank of the Río Huallaga , 35 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Tocache . The national road 5N from Tingo María to Bellavista crosses the district.
Geographical location
The Nuevo Progreso District is located in the southeast of the Tocache Province. The district lies on the east bank of the Río Huallaga. The mountains of the Eastern Cordillera rise to the east .
The Nuevo Progreso district borders in the west on the districts of La Morada , Santa Rosa de Alto Yanajanca and Cholón (all three in the province of Marañón ), in the northwest on the district Uchiza , in the northeast on the district Alto Biavo ( province Bellavista ) and in the southeast to the districts of Pucayacu and José Crespo y Castillo (both in the province of Leoncio Prado ).
