The José Crespo y Castillo district is located in the Leoncio Prado province in the Huánuco region in central Peru . The district was established on December 26, 1963. The district was named after José Crespo y Castillo (1747-1812), a leader of the Huánuco uprising in 1812. In 2015 and 2016, the newly founded districts of Pucayacu , Pueblo Nuevo and Santo Domingo de Anda were part of the district area of José Crespo y Castillo separated.
The José Crespo y Castillo district currently has an area of 1498 km². The 2017 census counted 22,149 inhabitants. The administrative seat of the district is the city of Aucayacu , located on the right bank of the Río Huallaga at an altitude of 540 m , with 16,929 inhabitants (as of 2017). Aucayacu is located about 45 km north of the provincial capital Tingo María .
Geographical location
The district is located in the northwest of the Leoncio Prado province. It has a longitudinal extension in east-west direction of 65 km. To the west of the district is the eastern flank of the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The eastern district boundary runs along the watershed of the Cordillera Azul , a ridge of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera . The Río Huallaga flows through the district in a northerly direction.
The José Crespo y Castillo district borders in the southwest and west by the district of Cochabamba , in the northwest on the district La Morada , on the north by the districts Nuevo Progreso ( province Tocache ) and Pucayacu, on the east by the districts Contamana ( province of Ucayali ) and Padre Abad ( province of Padre Abad ), in the southeast to the districts of Santo Domingo de Anda and Pueblo Nuevo and in the south to the districts of Rupa-Rupa and Monzón .
