The Contamana district is located in the Ucayali province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was founded on October 13, 1900. It has an area of ​​11,037 km². The 2017 census counted 23,883 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 17,106, in 2007 23,184. The seat of the district administration is the provincial capital Contamana, 134  m high on the east bank of the Río Ucayali , with 17,429 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Contamana district is located on the western edge of the Amazon basin in the south of the Ucayali province. The longitudinal extent in SW-NE direction is almost 230 km. The district extends in the west to the Cordillera Azul . The Río Pisqui flows through the southwest of the district. The Río Ucayali crosses the east of the district in a northerly direction. The area consists mainly of rainforest . In the far west is the Cordillera Azul National Park , in the far east the Sierra del Divisor National Park .

The Contamana district is bordered in the extreme southwest by the provinces of Leoncio Prado ( Huánuco region ) and Bellavista ( San Martín region ), in the northwest by the Pampa Hermosa district , and in the northeast by the Vargas Guerra , Maquía and Alto Tapiche districts (the last two in the Requena province ), in the southeast to the Coronel Portillo province ( Ucayali region ), in the central south to the Padre Márquez district and in the southwest to the Padre Abad province (Ucayali region).
