The Río Pisqui is an approximately 325 km long left tributary of the Río Ucayali in eastern Peru . It flows through the southwest of the Ucayali province in the Loreto region .

River course

The Río Pisqui rises at an altitude of about 1830  m in the Cordillera Azul , a mountain range of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera . It initially flows 20 km in a south-south-east direction through the mountains. The river then turns towards the east-northeast and reaches a pre-Andean region, which it crosses over the next 120 kilometers in a north-northeast direction. On this section it shows a strongly meandering behavior with numerous narrow river loops. Between river kilometers 160 and 110, the Río Pisqui cuts through a 600  m high ridge running in NNW- SSE direction. On the lower 110 kilometers it flows in an east-northeast direction through the western edge of the Amazon basin . Here he develops numerous river loops again. In addition, there are more oxbow lakes on the lower reaches , which indicate that the river in the lowlands keeps changing its course. The Río Pisqui finally flows into the Río Ucayali 67 km above the provincial capital Contamana at an altitude of about 130  m . There are only a few smaller settlements along the river.

Catchment area and hydrology

The catchment area of the Río Pisqui measures approximately 6350 km². It lies entirely within the Contamana district and extends from the Cordillera Azul in the west to the Río Ucayali in the east. In the southwest it borders on the catchment area of the Río Aguaytía . The mean discharge of the Río Pisqui is around 450 m³ / s.
