The Padre Márquez district is located in the Ucayali province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was established on July 2, 1943. It has an area of ​​2437 km². The 2017 census counted 3,804 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3095, in 2007 it was 5560. The seat of the district administration is the 164  m high village Tiruntán with 646 inhabitants located on the left bank of the Río Ucayali (status 2017). Tiruntán is located almost 70 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Contamana .

The area is populated by the indigenous people of the Shipibo-Conibo , who belong to the Pano language family .

Geographical location

The Padre Márquez district is located in the Peruvian part of the Amazon basin in the southeast of the Ucayali province. The district has a longitudinal extension in the WSW-ONO direction of almost 110 km and a maximum width of 45 km. The Río Ucayali crosses the district in a predominantly northwestern direction. The western part of the district is drained by the Río Tahuaya.

The Padre Márquez district is bordered to the west and the north by the district Contamana , on the east by the district Callería ( province of Coronel Portillo ) and in the south by the district Nueva Requena (also in the province of Coronel Portillo).
