The Sarayacu district is located in the Ucayali province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​6249 km². The 2017 census counted 15,049 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 13,312, in 2007 15,388. The district administration is located in Dos de Mayo, 125  m high and 2.5 km from the west bank of the Río Ucayali , with 381 inhabitants (as of 2017). Dos de Mayo is just 110 km north of the provincial capital Contamana .

Geographical location

The Sarayacu district is located in the Peruvian part of the Amazon basin in the north of the Ucayali province. The longitudinal extent in SW-NE direction is almost 150 km. The district extends from the Cordillera Azul in the extreme southwest to the splitting off of the Canal de Puinahua from the Río Ucayali in the extreme northeast. The Río Ucayali crosses the district in a predominantly northerly direction. The west of the district is drained by the Ucayali tributaries, Río Santa Catalina and Río Pacaya , and the east by the Río Yanayacu .

The Sarayacu district borders in the west on the districts Huimbayoc , Chipurana and Papaplaya (all three in the province of San Martín ), in the north on the district Puinahua ( province Requena ), in the east on the district Maquía (also in the province Requena), im South to the Vargas Guerra district and in the extreme southwest to the Pampa Hermosa district .
