The Maquía district is located in the Requena Province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was established on July 20, 1946. It extends over an area of ​​4895 km². The 2017 census counted 8384 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 7236, in 2007 it was 7905. The district administration is located in the 122  m high village of San Roque with 970 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Roque is about 120 km southwest of the provincial capital Requena .

Geographical location

The Maquía district is located in the Amazon lowlands in the southwest of the Requena province. The northern part of the district extends below the division of the Río Ucayali into two river arms. The southern part of the district largely corresponds to the catchment area of the Río Maquía , right tributary of the Río Ucayali.

The Maquía district is bordered by the Contamana district ( Ucayali province ) to the south, the Vargas Guerra and Sarayacu districts (both also in the Ucayali province) to the west, the Puinahua district to the northwest and the north, and the Emilio San district to the east Martín and in the extreme southeast to the Alto Tapiche district .
