The Puinahua district is located in the Requena Province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was established on July 2, 1943. It extends over an area of ​​6293 km². The 2017 census counted 4682 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4252, in 2007 it was 5298. The district administration is located in the 118  m high village of Bretaña with 1788 inhabitants (as of 2017). Bretaña is located about 60 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Requena .

Geographical location

The district of Puinahua is located in the Amazon lowlands in the far west of the province of Requena. The north-eastern part of the district extends along the Canal de Puinahua, the left arm of the Río Ucayali . The southwestern part of the district largely corresponds to the catchment area of the Río Pacaya , left tributary of the Río Ucayali.

The Puinahua district borders in the west on the districts Papaplaya ( San Martín province ), Teniente César López Rojas and Santa Cruz (both in the Alto Amazonas province ), in the northwest on the Parinari district ( Loreto province ), in the northeast on the Requena district , to the east and southeast to the districts of Capelo , Emilio San Martín and Maquía and to the south to the district of Sarayacu ( province of Ucayali ).
